Reading/research recommendations

Okay... now that I've figured out some ways to destroy the world, I need to rebuild it. Anyone have any recommendations for books about the history of civilization, or theories about how and why certain forms of government developed? I'm guessing I'm looking towards philosophy and anthropology here, but I'm not certain. Hrm. Maybe also sociology. Somebody point me in a direction, cause I'm not sure where I'm going.
