1. Countdown to Apocalypse: Asteroids, Tidal Waves, and the End of the World, Paul Halpern
Just the sort of thing to give a rousing start to a new year of reading! I picked this up at the library for novel research, and got considerably more than I'd bargained for. Halpern looks at every possible way the world might end, from man-made catastrophe to the heat death of the universe, and strangely enough, he's very soothing about it. The sections on astrophysics in the last few chapters have actually piqued my interest in the cosmos--which is frightening, considering how I feel about physics in general.
