Well, the good news is,
Well, the good news is, I have my laptop back, FINALLY.
The bad news is, class ends this week, so this week is pretty much shot as far as writing goes. Writing papers. Several of them. I WILL spend the two weeks between semesters writing. I will. Stop laughing.

Hi Lisa! Good morning! I'm totally procrastinating this morning, surfing instead of writing, and saw your note.
A lot of the established pros I've spoken to have steered me AWAY from getting an agent. They suggest I send a novel (usually a synopsis and first 3 chapters) directly to an editor at a publishing house.
While more publishers are not accepting unsolicitied manuscripts, you can still send something to them after you make some sort of contact with the editor, at a convention or whatnot. It sucks, but you gotta schmooze more for a novel.
But as for agents, Kris Rusch said a mouthful -- any agent you could get at this point in my career (with no prior novels in print) would be a bad agent. Harsh words, yeah, but probably true.
So that's why I'm going to WorldCon -- to meet some editors and press the flesh... :)
Good luck!
